There are a few different flower foam types and its important that you know how to prepare your flowers for the foams. Don’t worry though here is a guide to help you with the flower foam types and how to prepare flowers for foam’s.
Dark Green Foam Block
The first type of flower foam is the dark green block.
This is used for fresh Flower arrangements and there are various density’s available to suit the flower type.
Firm – Best suited to flowers with strong stems.
Medium – Generally suitable for most flower types.
Light – Best suited to Spring Flower and flowers with softer or delicate stems.
You need to soak all of these foams prior to use, you should fill a bowl or sink with cold water (you can add flower food to this water if you want) and then place the foam on top and allow this to sink to the bottom so it absorbs the maximum amount of water and does not get any air pockets. The foam will turn a darker green when fully wet.
Grey Foam Block
The second type of flower foam is the grey block.
This is used for dried/artificial flower arrangements and does not need to be soaked prior to use. Grey foam is a much denser foam and this provides excellent support for dried or artificial flowers.
AOB Foam’s
All foams come in various shapes and sizes, but they are also very easy to cut to the required shape and size with a floral knife.
You want your foam to be a tight fit to your chosen container and you should finally secure this with waterproof floristry tape.
Flower Prepration for Foam’s
When preparing your flowers to go into the foam you should cut your stems at an angel. Cutting at an angle creates a point to pierce the foam first, and creates a snug fit for the stem in the foam. Make sure you don’t cut your stem on a nodule as this creates a bigger hole than needed in the foam and reduce the flower’s ability to absorb water. Also make sure you trim off any excess leaves from the stems so these aren’t pushing into the foam.
When inserting your flowers into the foam you want these to be inserted 1.5 – 3 inches. You want to the stems have access to water so they last. As a rough guide you want vertical stems to go in about 1.5 – 2 inches and horizontal about 2 – 3 inches.
You should add a little water to your foam every few days to keep your flowers hydrated and maintain the lifespan of your arrangement.
