How to Make a Corn Starch Puff

A corn starch puff is the secret weapon for people working with fondant icing! So I am going to show you how to make a corn starch puff. Using this puff to dust your surface and fondant moulds makes the life of a fondant worker a little easier, and this is refillable too!

A corn starch puff is basically a thin piece of cloth or fabric that is filled with corn starch or corn flour. A corn flour puff is really useful when you are working with fondant as fondant can stick to surfaces or your fondant moulds. Fondant can be especially tricky if you are working in humid climates as fondant tends to become stickier with humidity due to the extra moisture in the air.

The idea behind the corn starch puff is that you can use this to lightly and evenly dust your surface, silicone moulds, rolling pins etc with to stop the fondant from sticking. This is a simple little tool that you can just lay your hands on to re dust when needed. This puff can be refilled too when it starts to run out, so its environmentally friendly too!

This Corn starch puff is super easy to make, you can probably make it using items you have lying around the house, and make it in less than 10 minutes too!

What you need to make a corn starch puff

  • Muslin or another light wight fabric
  • Scissors or Pinking Shears
  • Pins
  • Tape measure
  • Ribbons / String / Elastic band
Everything you need to make a corn starch puff including scissors, muslin, corn flour. ribbons, pins and a tape measure.

How to Make it

Prepare your Fabric

Take the muslin or the fabric you have chosen, and lay this out flat.

Measure and Pin

Now it’s time to decide how big you want your corn starch puff to be, I made mine 8 inches x 8 inches, but it’s your corn puff so you can make it whatever size you want (I would’nt make it any smaller than this though). Once you have decided how big you want this, use your pins to mark out where you will need to cut.

Cut, Cut, Cut

Now you know where you need to cut, take your scissors or pinking shears, (I used pinking shears as these help to prevent fraying around the edges of your fabric) and cut out your square.

Add Corn Flour

Pour enough corn flour into the middle of your fabric so this will create a nice ball of corn flour when this is all pulled together.

Gather the Edges

Pull all the edges of your fabric up and around your corn flour to form a ball, and then twist the fabric at the top.

Tie / Secure it

Now it’s time to secure your corn flour puff, you can do this by using an elastic band or some string, I chose to use ribbons as I just wanted it to look pretty, but you can use whatever you have to hand.

Its that simple, 6 steps and about 10 minutes of your time, and there you have it, your secret weapon for making life working with fondant just a little easier.

Storage and Shelf Life

To keep the corn starch in your puff fresh, all you need to do is to keep this in a zip lock bag as this will stop any dust from getting on to this and it will stop the flour from going stale. You can write the shelf life that is on the box of your corn flour on to the zip lock bag to keep a note of the shelf life, however remember to update this, if needs be every time, you refill it.

Final Word

I love using my corn starch puff when I work with fondant, as it just makes my life so much simpler, it helps me to just lightly dust everything with corn flour to stop the fondant from sticking. I find this a really useful little tool, and I hope it makes working with fondant a little easier for you too.
